How to Create a New Circle in Google+

For all those who are new to the concept of Google+, allow me to explain that Google+ is Google's new social networking tool. However, currently they seem to be trying it with a small number of people to check the reviews and its working, but they are pretty confident that it won't be long before it is ready for everyone. One of the unique features of this tool is to create a group of friends via circles. Circles enable us to follow the people existing in that particular circle, just like in twitter. These are specially created to help you organize everyone, according to the real-life social connections. For example, you have a family circle for family members exclusively, and likewise for work friends, close friends, acquaintances and so on. All this just makes it easier to share relevant content with the right kind of people. For example, if you are throwing a party for your office colleagues; show it only to office friends circle. This is not it, you can also customize your personal information for every circle. So, if you do not want a certain set of friends to know about your relationship status, location, or any other details, you might as well exclude those details from that particular circle. Having talked so much about these circles you must be wondering, "how to create a new circle in Google+ and add a new person". I have listed down one of the most easiest and preferred way to create circles in Google+. Scroll down...
Creating a New Circle in Google+
•     Step #1
To begin with, login to your Google plus account with your user id and password. You will have your Google+ account open in front of you. Now, go to the tool bar at the top of your page and click on the circles icon. This will open the circles page in a new tab.
•     Step #2
By default there are 4 circles created by Google+, which include Friends, Family, Acquaintances, and Following. Apart from these default circles, if you wish to create some new ones, here is what you have to do. Select the people you want to add to the group. You can either select one person by clicking on the name title or multiple titles using your cursor. You can put the same person into as many circles as you like. For example, if you want your cousin to be in your family as well as your friends circle you are welcome to do so.
•     Step #3
Once you are ready with a friend or list of friends, drag and drop them in a blank circle, which would read "drop here to create new circle." You will find this icon at the bottom of your screen. When you are done with the above, the circle will display the number of people you've added in the circle. If in case you happen to add a person twice or if you have added someone to the circle already, they wouldn't get added twice. So, you don't worry.
•     Step #4
When you finish with adding all the friends, the text on the circle will change to "create circle." Click it. You will have an empty box pop up, asking you to name the circle. Type in the name of your circle and click "create circle with x people." you can always add more fiends to this actual circle, which appears in your profile now. You can also rename your circle, whenever you want. For that you need to click on "rename" next to the name of the circle, edit it and click save.
•     Step #5
If you have done everything properly, the newly created circle should appear near the four default circles in your profile. In case you want to get a person out of your circle; click on that particular circle to which the person belongs, select the one you would like to remove and click remove. Done! To delete an entire circle, you select that specific circle, click "delete this circle" at the end of the pop up box and you are done. Remember, once you delete a circle, you cannot recover it back in any case.

Top 10 Gadgets for College Students

Gadgets are what make life 'cool'. Gadgets are different from electronic devices in that they need not always be about being 'useful' per se. Sometimes gadgets just make life easy, and make using certain appliances and devices a lot simpler than it would have been without the gadget. When I think about the people who invent these über-cool things, I can picture some dude wearing loose beige-colored baggy pants and a cool blue T-shirt with a hooded shirt thrown over it; hair messy like he just got out of bed; sneakers on his feet; Nike sack over his shoulders. And what is in that sack? An assortment of all the gadgets mentioned below, and a lot more I guess! LOL.Gadgets sure are indispensable in today's world, a must to survive, and a prerequisite for college! Find below a list of cool gadgets for college students. The list does not end here though, so feel free to add your own 'WANTED' gadgets to the list!
Top 10 Gadgets for College Students
1. Laptop
This one hardly needs an explanation. A laptop is a must - even if you have a phone with Wi-Fi, a watch that allows you to browse mail (yeah they actually make those nowadays) or whatever. You do not want to be sitting with your phone to type out your thesis or to complete an assignment. Besides, everything is electronic these days. Gone are the days when students would carry notebooks and stationery to college. It's an e-world; and an e-world begins with computers and laptops.
2. Portable Hard Drive
Even if you have a laptop, not everything you want or need is going to fit in the limited storage space that a laptop offers. Portable hard drives are what you need in such cases. You can have different hard drives to store different kinds of data - music on one, movies on another, etc. Even if you do not have so much data to store, it is always a good idea to back up whatever data you have on the laptop, and a hard drive is a much simpler option to back it up rather than CDs, DVDs and all that.

How to Choose a Digital Voice Recorder

When it comes to electronic shopping, you start out with an idea, wade through millions of different options and models and end up with something you don't quite understand why you brought it in the first place. And this scenario happens with most gadgets, let them be tablet PCs and laptops or wireless headphones. What about the simple voice recorder? What started out as a box-like recording machine is now a pen or lighter-sized device, that can record audio and store it in a digital format. But in the sea of brands, prices and tech specs, how to choose a digital voice recorder that best suits your recording needs? Let's find out...

How to Select a Digital Voice Recorder?
To choose the best digital voice recorder, you need to be well-versed with what tech features the best voice recorder should possess. Below are some factors of a voice recorder that you should check out:

Recording Time and Quality
There is a hidden catch with recording quality, the longer you get to record something, the lower the audio quality. So if you record a 15 minute speech, the quality subsequently is very low. On the other hand, a 3 minute dialog can be recorded and played back at a very high quality. So the face-off is quality vs. quantity and the result is based on your needs. If you want long recordings and can do with low quality audio, then opt for longer recording duration. But if your recordings need to be used in meetings, presentations and products, and you cannot use low quality audio, then look for the longest recording duration with sound quality. Even transcribing audio-to-text requires a good recording quality. Some recorders allow you to select the level of recording quality, so you can fluctuate between high and low-level recording ability as needed. To increase the quality of your recordings, buy a recorder with an external microphone jack, so you can connect a microphone to the recorder and pick up high quality audio. For large gatherings and meetings, where a lot of noise is present, a microphone can enhance the recording's quality.

How Does a Water Jet Cutter Work?

Water jet cutters may be still alien to many of us. To me it wasn't known until a few weeks ago, when a telly series on cutting metal and other substances amazed me. Along with high-end cutting machines with razor-sharp cutting technologies, it surprised me when they showed something as liquid as water being used to cut the hardest of substances. Now this is some technology and after this I truly believed in the capacities of engineering and the human mind. Using water pressure to cut substances, was roughly practiced during the mid 1800's. But the concrete concept of using water pressure as a cutting tool was discovered by Dr. Norman Franz, who was an engineer in forestry, in the year 1950. This was founded as an attempt to find new options to cut trees. He studied the technology of 'ultra high water pressure' (UHP) to be used as a cutting tool. Later to cut high-end solid substances, abrasives were added with the stream of water, which would let them cut even metals, with ease. With advancements today, the water jet cutter has been used in many sectors for cutting, drilling and milling. With water jet cutters being a revolutionary tool in the industrial sector, a little insight into its work mechanism will be interesting.

How to Use a Digital Voice Recorder

The phonograph was the first instrument which was used for sound recording. It was used mainly for studying languages. The voice of the native speakers of a language was recorded and other non-native people learned the language and the pronunciation using the recorded voice. After some years, cassette recorder was used to record voices, though with low sound quality. Later, after the advent of digital voice recorders, voices are being recorded with better sound quality, file sharing and with more convenience in usage.
Digital Voice RecorderA digital voice recorder, functions almost same as that of a tape recorder, except that, it doesn't have a tape. As the recording and listening process is easy and quick, it is widely used by students, interviewers, academicians, journalists, etc., to record their voices and re-record them if they choose to. Digital voice files are incorporated to record the voice data. In a digital voice recorder, the voice data is stored in the form of discrete numbers, and the value depends on the air pressure involved during the voice modulations. But the input is a continuous stream of analog data. The analog signal is converted into digital signal by Analog-to Digital Converter (ADC). The output of the ADC is in the form of stream data consisting of 0s and 1s, which is stored in the memory and later converted to analog data. It is important to convert the digital data into analog data, because, we can hear only analog signals.
How to Use a Digital Voice Recorder
The digital voice recorder is a device which looks like a USB device, that records voice data. The three main components of a digital voice recorder are:

    Microphone , to capture the sound waves
    Amplifier, to amplify the incoming data
    Recording Device, to record the voice data

Components Used in the Digital Voice Recorder

Now, you need to familiarize yourself with the buttons present in the digital voice recorder. Some of the commonly used buttons are play, stop, record, forward and rewind, menu. Some versions of the digital voice recorder, can also have some buttons combined, such as play/pause or record/stop.
    Identify some other components such as microphone, USB, headphone jack, speaker, in your device.
    The screen of the digital voice recorder will display the recording time left, indicator to show the recording process, location of the data file, battery life, etc.

Process of Recording the Voice
Choose, the location of the file, where you want to save it from the folders in the menu.
    After choosing the file location, press the record button and start recording your voice through the microphone.
    Ensure that the indicator in the display screen of your recorder, indicates the recording process.
    Now you can go back to the file location and listen to the voice recorded, by pressing the play button.
    By pressing the forward and rewind keys, you can control the action. You can also increase and decrease the volume by pressing the '+' and '-' buttons, respectively.

Salt Crystals - Recipe

Minerals are formed of tiny particles known as atoms. These atoms in most minerals have recurring pattern and follow a three-dimensional pattern. Due to this, a mineral has the ability to form in to a normal crystal with flat sides. Certain crystals have the ability to develop into cubes, while others develop into crystals with more than two sides. The latter is known as a prism.
Crystals can be easily grown at home using basic ingredients. Salt, sugar and alum crystals are often made at home. The basics for all of these materials remains same, where in you need to let the chemical dissolve in water and let the water evaporate or cool the solution which will automatically crystallize the substance. Before learning how to grow salt crystals using salt crystal recipes, let us look at some more information on salt crystals.

How to Distinguish Between Crystal and Glass

The fundamental idea is that, all crystals are glasses but all glasses are not crystals. The uses of glasses and crystals are numerous. We use crystal wares and glass wares in our houses, mostly for decorative purposes. Different types of spectacle glasses are widely used in our day-to-day life and we can even make jewelry out of crystals. Now, when we look into the differences between glass and crystal, some differences are visible to the naked eye and some can be found through experiments only. But before knowing how to identify glass from crystals, it is necessary to understand what is a glass and what is a crystal. Let's analyze it.

What was the Milgram Experiment?

What is the difference between right and wrong? And when should one question the difference? If you are told to hit someone violently, you would object but what if your boss or your superior or even your elders told you to obey them and hit someone, then would you do it? Does someone's authority make an obviously wrong act, a right one? Questioning authority is a two-edged sword, you could end up being labeled a rebel or a troublemaker or you could end up compromising on your own sense of ethics. Ethical dilemmas can take various shapes and forms but with respect to obedience, the outcome can be very unpredictable. Read on to learn about the Milgram experiment, a psychological test to evaluate man's struggle between obedience and morality.

There's a Shot for That

Two centuries ago Edward Jenner administered the first scientifically developed vaccine, injecting fluid from a dairymaid’s skin lesion into an 8-year-old boy. The English physician knew that dairymaids who contracted cowpox, a comparatively mild skin disease, became immune to the much deadlier smallpox, which at the time killed 400,000 Europeans a year. Jenner hoped the fluid from the cowpox lesion would somehow inoculate the boy against the smallpox scourge.
His hunch proved correct. Today vaccines (vaccinia is Latin for “cowpox”) of all forms save 3 million lives per year worldwide, and at a bargain price. A measles shot, for instance, costs less than a dollar per dose.

How to Become a Ball Boy/Girl?
  I have divided this section into 2 parts. The first part will tell you what you should have to become a good ball person, and the second part will tell you what you should do to become a ball boy/girl.
Essentials to Become a Ball Boy/Girl
Becoming a ball person is easy, if you have the following:
Love for the Game
If you do not love tennis, then you might get bored with your work after a few matches. You are not going to earn much, so when your job schedule turns out to be tiring, the only thing that will motivate you will be your love for the game of tennis. To become a successful ball boy/girl you should have a strong liking for the game, without it all your efforts to become a ball person are futile.

Dangers of Technology Addiction

The subject of technology addiction is relatively new as compared to drug or gambling addictions. This leads to a heated dispute over whether we need to consider the fervent need for technology and the monotony that the lack of technology causes, as an addiction. There are several qualifications that a craving needs to be termed as an addiction.
What Makes an Addiction?
The human state survival works on a simple reward system. Every time you attain a biological requirement like food, sex or lactation, the body releases a neurotransmitter called 'dopamine' (in this case, into the brain) that helps us decide the approach to something to be rewarded. This means the phase of wanting something and getting it, and the eventual liking of it is controlled by dopamine. It is this that fuels an addiction. Once you start using a piece of technology (like video games) and eventually start to like it, release of dopamine in the brain creates a reward system for it, which creates an addiction for it. The same example works for cigarettes - nicotine induces a dopamine release, creating the craving for more. An important point here is that people who seek more satisfaction from things, actually are seeking more in terms of dopamine release, and therefore require a larger release of the neurotransmitter, which in turn requires you to pursue that thing even more.

How Does a Rotary Phase Converter Work

A rotary phase converter may be defined as a device that helps an instrument or a technical equipment to run on a single-phase power. This device can be used to run original three phase equipment on a single phase power. To explain the dynamics of the same, a rotary phase converter produces a three-phase power from a single-phase power source. Thus, what the rotary phase converter does is to add a third source of power to the existing two power sources so that a three-phase power supply is generated.
Why You Must Use a Rotary Phase Converter
Rotary phase converters use a three-phase source of power with a power check correction factor, making the rotary-phase converter a safe and secure bet in providing energy. A rotary phase converter is made effective through equipping it with an efficient kick start capacity. The rotary phase converter can be employed at locations that do not have 3 phase service provided in the area. Electric companies may provide a 3-phase service, however the charges may not prove to be cost effective. The average cost may range anywhere between $30,000 to $90,000 to cover 1 mile with costs for internal wiring distribution costs. A rotary phase converter can thus, be considered an economical avenue as it does not require a 3-phase service set up to be installed. A single phase circuit installation is all that is required. It is very important that you consider the longevity factor before you purchase the rotary phase converter which provides for efficient start-up capabilities. It must also be equipped well to convert the single-phase power to three phase power sources. Before you decide on a rotary converter, check if the rotary phase converter is providing equal and well balanced power. If, however the power distribution is not even the equipment can sustain damage while working.
Types of Phase Converters
There are various types of phase converters. Digital phase converters and static phase converters are the other two types of converters apart from the rotary phase converter. The phase converters are suitable for various purposes. Static phase converters are used to give an efficient start up current to an engine whereas, rotary phase converters are employed to change single phase power to three phase power. This is not meant to deliver start up power to engines but is used in regulating large machinery. In this section we concentrate on the working of the rotary phase converter.

Types of Cell Division

Before we get to the part about the phenomenon or types of cell division, let's take a closer look at the two basic types of organic cellular structures that exist in this world as we know it. A cell can be either prokaryotic or eukaryotic, based upon its structural makeup. Prokaryotic cells have a simple, very basic structure as they neither have cell nuclei nor are they equipped with cellular organelles enclosed within membranes. In other words, all genetic matter and other areas partaking in various cellular functions and metabolic activities exist in free states within the cellular boundaries. Eukaryotic cells, on the other hand, are the more evolved, hi-tech counterparts of prokaryotic cells. They have all things that prokaryotic cells lack - cell nuclei holding all the genetic matter of the cells inside them, separate membrane bound organelles that have exclusive and specific tasks assigned to them (such as mitochondria, Golgi apparatus, chloroplasts, etc.), etc.
As you must have guessed by now, the more complex an organism is in terms of its physical structure and physiological functions, the more it is likely to have a eukaryotic cellular structure. This fact is evidenced by the fact the simplest of all life forms such as bacteria and archaea belong to the prokaryotic domain of biological classification. Now that the particulars of the two basic cellular structures have been discussed, let's move ahead to the next segment and take a look at what the various different types of cell division are.

How to Replace an ABS Wheel Speed Sensor

The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) is one of the most significant parts in the safety package of an automobile. The main job of this technology is to prevent wheel lockup, at a time when momentary wheel rotation is actually needed for proper braking on slippery surfaces. The system functions using several components, out of which wheel speed sensors are one of the most prominent. It is the sensors that keep an eye on the speed of wheels and aid in releasing brake pressure during hard braking. The wheel speed is detected from the toothed wheel by the magnetic sensors, and sent to the ABS computer for brake and release action. If the ABS speed sensor goes bad, the braking will be a kind of irregular and abrupt when braking on low speeds. If you are considering this replacement as a DIY task, wear proper protective gear such as safety eye wear and gloves. Below is an explanation of how to replace an ABS wheel speed sensor.
Steps on How to Replace an ABS Wheel Speed Sensor
Since the sensors use battery power to function, replacing them firstly needs the battery connection to be disconnected. This can be done by disconnecting the negative terminal on the battery under the hood. Place wooden blocks or flat stones in front of every wheel to keep the car stable when doing this repair. In addition, also activate the parking brake. Lift the car using jacks and safety stands on the axle.As the ABS sensors are located behind the wheel assembly, you need to take out the wheel. Use a wrench and turn it counterclockwise on the lug nuts to remove the wheel off the hub. You might need to give a jerk to take the wheel off the assembly. The sensor would be a small black assembly on the hub. If you have just got the sensor changed and are experiencing ABS brake problems, a good idea is to clean the sensor. Clean the oil on the sensor and connectors with a cloth, fix the assembly correctly, and then see if the issue is resolved.
If you are sure about replacing ABS wheel speed sensor, you then need to take out the sensor's cable from the harness connector. The sensor would be joined to the hub by a small bolt which has to be removed. Ensure that you have the same sensor model like the old one to retain proper functioning of ABS. Take the new sensor and fix it on the appropriate place, by tightening the bolt on the assembly. Plug in the harness connector in the respective space on the new sensor.Make sure that there is no visible gap between the toothed wheel and sensor tip. However, the system works fine with a maximum of 0.04 inch gap between these two points. Reinstall the wheel assembly and tighten the nuts securely. Take the car off the jack stands slowly to rest on the ground. Do not forget to connect the negative terminal back on the battery, without which the ABS sensors won't work. During the replacement, you can even think about replacing the sensor cable as well. The total cost of the DIY project might come to around $50, just for the price of a new sensor and cable.Many a times, a simple cleanup of the sensor setup is more than enough to resolve ABS problems. For effective functioning of the system, do a periodical cleanup of the sensors on all wheels. The procedure for replacing ABS sensors on both front and rear axles is much the same as described in the above article. If you are not at all sure about the replacement, it is suggested to take professional help from an authorized service tech.

How to Make Algae Biofuel

The best way to go about understanding a how is to first get a good understanding of the what involved - that's one principle that I believe in and live by! Hence, before proceeding towards understanding how to make algae biofuel, let's take a closer look at what algae biofuel is all about. As the name suggests, this type of fuel is derived from algae and the method most commonly used is breaking down the alga's carbohydrate content via fermentation. This fermentation would result into biologically produced forms of the alcohols ethanol and butanol. Although it is gaining a lot of popularity these days as a potential alternative for traditional fossil fuels, this is so merely due to the fact that the doubled-edged sword of rapid depletion of traditional resources and ever increasing fossil fuel prices is hanging over the head of human civilization by a precariously thin thread.Other than that, algal fuel doesn't offer us much novelty value in terms of low polluting potential. You see, burning algal biofuel releases equally large amounts of carbon dioxide into the air as burning coal or petroleum based fuels do, as algae, being plant forms, need atmospheric carbon dioxide for photosynthesis. When you make fuel out of algae and burn it, this locked up carbon dioxide gets released into the atmosphere, undoing what algae did during its lifetime as a botanical life form. That being said, let's proceed towards finding out all about the algae biofuel extraction process.

Things We Can Do To Stop Global Warming

Global warming is caused due to the rising levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere that embraces the radiated heat and stores it, increasing the overall global temperatures to dangerous levels. The rising temperatures have caused the glaciers to melt, thus causing an increase in the sea level. Unpredictable weather and a strange change in climate patterns are also some of the effects of global warming. In fact, according to a recent study, over the past three decades our planet is said to be shrinking at a faster rate. Extreme climatic conditions like drought in some parts of the world while heavy rains in some others and record heat waves in most of the parts have send an alarming message to stop global warming. It is not that we are not trying to curb global warming; the governments of various countries and the UN (United Nations) have already started with their efforts to address the problem of global warming. They are doing their bit, and its time for us to address this sensitive problem on a personal level. Given below are a few things we can do to stop global warming.

Plant Mitosis Vs. Animal Mitosis

Microscopic cells are a vital component of all living organisms and each living body, whether plant or animal, is made up of several such cells which contribute towards carrying out basic life functions. In order to sustain life these cells need to reproduce from time to time, so as to keep their numbers constant. Over time, cells suffer from wear and tear and old age, and eventually stop functioning, so it is extremely essential for these cells to be present in large numbers and in a healthy state in order to sustain life.Cell division is something that has fascinated scientists for many years now, and the ability of these cells to create perfectly identical copies of themselves is truly something to be marveled at. Irrespective of all the wonders of technology around us, the fact remains that something as simple as cell division is a truly magical process. This cell division is what is known as Mitosis, and this is what keeps living organisms alive. Needless to say, the process of mitosis in plants and animals is very different, and this is why one needs to understand the complete difference between plant mitosis vs. animal mitosis.
What is Mitosis
The cells inside plants and animals are known as Eukaryotes, and these are cells that are embedded and housed inside membranes. The most important membrane of this cell is the nucleus, and this is what distinguishes eukaryotes from prokaryotes, and the nucleus is also the component that enables cell division and mitosis. Mitosis is nothing but the division of one single cell into two genetically identical cells, and this is carried out for the sole purpose of continuing life. Mitosis is immediately followed by a process known as Cytokinesis, and both these processes together define the Mitotic Phase of the cell cycle in a living body. The various stages of mitosis are as follows.

    * Interphase: Though this phase is not really a part of mitosis, it generally precedes the whole process of cell reproduction. It does so by preparing the cell for division and also provides it with all the necessary nutrients and proteins.
    * Preprophase: This phase occurs only in plant cells, and it involves the creation of a bisecting line along the center of the cell, and this line shows where the cell will divide. This bisecting line is known as Phragmosome and it is made of cytoplasm.
    * Prophase: In this phase the chromatin (which is the combination of the proteins and DNA of the nucleus) gets divided into two chromosomes which are still attached to each other, and each of these chromosomes start moving to opposite sides of the cell.
    * Prometaphase: This phase precedes metaphase, and in this case the nucleus fragments start breaking and moving towards the chromosomes. The microtubules of the cell also slowly start attaching themselves to the chromosomes and this is a sign that the cell division has truly begun.
    * Metaphase: The microtubules now get attached to the kinetochores on the chromosomes, and they start moving to opposite sides with renewed speed. The alignment between the chromosomes is equal, and the DNA distribution is exactly identical as well.
    * Anaphase: In this phase the chromosomes get cleaved right through the center and they move completely to different sides of the cell. Many stages of elongation and bisection are carried out here for the chromosomes to be divided.
    * Telophase: The last step of mitosis involves the actual splitting up of the chromosomes into two distinct parts, and the cleaning up and the strengthening of the membrane also occurs here. Upon the completion of this stage, the process of mitosis is completed, and the process of cytokinesis then begins.

Pros and Cons of Vegetable Oil as Fuel

As the issue of depletion of non-renewable sources is gaining momentum, researchers have started looking for other alternatives. There is a huge strain on gulf countries to produce oil in adequate quantities to satisfy the need of various countries of the world. Environmental concerns have also played an important part in establishing the need to look at other sources of energy, which are relatively less dangerous for the environmental health. Vegetable oil has emerged as strong contenders as an alternative fuel, however their use in commercial vehicles is still at an early stage.Vegetable oil can be used as an automobile fuel as there is a lot of waste that comes out from cooking and other agricultural products. Vegetable oils that are used as a fuel come under two categories - Straight Vegetable Oils (SVO) and Waste Vegetable Oils (WVO). As the name suggests, SVO is the oil that is available in the grocery stores and this oil can work in diesel engines after making some necessary modifications to the engine. WVO on the other hand, is the oil that has been used for cooking. The global food industry produces WVO in huge amounts, which when purified can be used as a fuel. There are numerous advantages of using vegetable oil as a fuel but there are some challenges involved before it can be used in automobiles on a large scale. Let us take a look at the pros and cons of vegetable oil as fuel.

Earth's Crust Facts

Most of us know that the interior of the Earth is made up of four different layers; the crust, mantle, inner core and the outer core. You may also come across some sources which stress on the fact that the Earth's interior is made up of three layers; the crust, mantle and the core. (These sources further divide core into outer core and inner core.) Few of us are also well-versed with the fact that three of the four main layers of the Earth are in solid state, while the fourth one is in liquid state. Beyond this, however, our knowledge about the Earth's interior hits a roadblock; and this loophole is exposed when we try to get to the details of the subject. The crust, i.e. the outermost layer of the planet, happens to be one such less known attribute of our planet, and we will be stressing on the same from here on.
Interesting Facts about the Earth's Crust
In geological studies, the term 'crust' refers to the outermost layer of the planet or other celestial bodies such as natural satellites. In case of the Earth, it is the layer on which we live, typically characterized by the presence of gelogical landforms such as mountains, plateaus, seabed, etc. The Earth's crust is made of three types of rocks; igneous rocks, sedimentary rocks and metamorphic rocks. It is the thinnest layer of the Earth, and typically forms mere 1 percent of the total volume of the planet. As you go through more of such Earth's crust facts given below, you will come across some of the most amazing attributes of our planet that you must have never heard before.
* In a broad sense, the Earth's crust is divided into two types - continental crust, which forms continents and continental shelves, and oceanic crust, which forms the surface of the oceans basins on the planet. While the continental crust is made up of felsic rocks or sial (rich in silicon and aluminum), oceanic crust is made up of mafic rocks or sima (rich in iron and magnesium).
    * In terms of volume, the continental crust-oceanic crust ratio stands at 70:30, with the former constituting for 70 percent of the crust. The thickness of the Earth's crust varies from one region to another; with the thickness of continental crust ranging between 20-30 miles, and oceanic crust ranging between 3-6 miles on an average, and that explains the 70:30 ratio between the two.
    * In regions like the Himalayas in the Indian-subcontinent and Andes in South America, the thickness of this layer exceeds 20 miles; and this can be attributed to crustal thickening as a result of igneous activity and tectonic over-thrusting during collision.
    * As in case of the crust of planets like Mercury, Venus or Mars, or that of the Moon, even the Earth's crust is formed as a result of igneous processes, and that explains why it is richer in incompatible elements as compared to mantle.
    * As we go deeper inside the crust, the temperatures begin to increase; and typically reach somewhere between 392°F and 752°F at its boundary with the mantle. The temperature rise is recorded to be somewhere around 50°F for every km in the upper crust; and from thereon the geothermal gradient becomes even steeper.
    * The outer crust of the Earth is broken up into regions known as tectonic plates. The movement of these plates, which float on top of molten rock in the interior of the Earth, tends to trigger earthquakes and form mountains on the planet.
    * The Earth's crust displacement theory, which highlights polar shift and states that a catastrophic shift of the Earth’s lithosphere in somewhere around 10,000 BC., triggered the formation of Antarctica, was put forth by Charles Hapgood.
    * Interestingly, the crust happens to be the only layer of the Earth's interior which can be studied by drilling. Earth's core and mantle, on the other hand, are mapped by studying the behavior of seismic waves beneath the surface of the Earth.
    * The deepest hole ever drilled in the Earth's crust, or the deepest artificial point on Earth, happens to be Kola Superdeep Borehole (KSDB-3) in the Kola Peninsula, in Russia, with a depth of 12,262 metres (40,230 ft).
    * Even though the crust doesn't quite have direct influence on the lifeforms, it indirectly means a lot to all the species on the planet as several natural resources come from it. At the same time, the movement of crust is also known to play a crucial role in determining the topography of the planet.

Temperate Forest Biome

The temperate forest biome, as its name suggests, is located in the temperate regions of the world i.e. the 'northern temperate zone' and the 'southern temperate zone' on the planet. It spans across the continents of North America, Europe and Asia in the northern hemisphere of the planet, and covers a significant portion of the South America and Australia in the southern hemisphere. Even with such vast expanse, temperate forest biome is not really as popular as the other biomes of the world, such as the rainforest biome or the tundra biome; and that is quite surprising considering that it is quite rich in terms of biodiversity.
Facts about Temperate Forest Biome
In a broad sense, the temperate forests are categorized into temperate deciduous forests, temperate broadleaf and mixed forests, temperate coniferous forest and temperate rainforests. Discussed below are the general details of each of these temperate forest types found across the world.
Temperate Deciduous Forest
Also referred to as the temperate broadleaf forest or temperate broadleaved forest, temperate deciduous forests are typically characterized by the presence of trees which lose their leaves every year as a part of survival adaptations. As with the other temperate forest types, even temperate forests have a temperate climate, with maximum temperature reaching 90°Fahrenheit in summer and 55°Fahrenheit in winter, and an annual precipitation of 35 to 60 inches. Other than the ability to shed their leaves and minimize transpiration, specially modified leaves which absorb sunlight as well as water help plants survive in the temperate deciduous forests. Species like oak, maple, elm, etc., are found in abundance in these forests.

Holographic Data Storage

Nowadays, blue ray DVDs and hard drives are types of computer data storage devices which have the most capacity. The information in all these devices is stored in the form of bits. Data is recorded and read one bit at a time, which makes data processing slow. Have you imagined a technology far more advanced than these mediums? One of such technologies that is considered to replace today's data storage systems is 'holographic data storage'. Read on, to get to know more about holographic data storage devices.
Holographic Data Storage Invention and Development
In the early 1960s, a scientist named Pieter J. van Heerden brought forth the idea of creating a holographic system for fast and large data storage. After some years, scientists working at RCA Laboratories, managed to record over 500 holograms in a lithium-niobate crystal and roughly another 500 images onto polymer material. Nevertheless, lack of cheap materials and the development of magnetic data storage components caused this idea to be put on hold.InPhase Technologies, in the mid-2000s, publicly announced its holographic storage device. However, in February 2010, the company business was stopped, as Colorado government took over its assets for not paying taxes on time. Recently, in April 2009, GE Global Research exhibited their holographic data storage device. It is believed that InPhase and Nintendo have entered a contract to come up with holographic data storage systems for video games.

Characteristics of Jovian Planets

According to the Solar Nebula hypothesis for the formation of the Solar System, the Solar system was nothing but a rotating mass of clouds, in the beginning. Primarily composed of hydrogen and helium, these clouds also had traces of heavier elements. As the speed of rotation of the cloud mass or nebula increased, heat and pressure began to develop within. This gradual build up of heat and pressure caused the nebula to explode. The center of the nebula, known as the protosun, was the region of highest temperature and the matter around this protosun was automatically reduced to the gaseous state. However, regions close the circumference of the nebula were cooler and it was here that matter was found in the condensed form.After the formation of the Solar System, the gravitational force of the sun gradually pulled the masses of higher density towards it due to which the planets made of rocks began to revolve in smaller orbits around the sun. The planets made of gaseous matter moved to orbits farther away from the sun. Revolving in their orbits around the sun gave the planets a spherical shape. The immense gravitational pull of the large gaseous planets attracted matter scattered around the solar system and this matter, both rocks particles and gases, began to revolve around these planets and thus the rings and many moons of these planets were formed.

Uses of Solar Energy

We all know that solar energy is one of the most powerful and inexhaustible sources of energy. The need to explore alternative sources of energy arose when large scale consumption of energy started taking place in the form of fossil fuels, coals, gas, etc. These are forms of exhaustible energy as they are limited in supply and will end some day. Solar energy or in layman's language, the energy derived from sun rays can not only be replenished but it will never get exhausted. After considerable research and analysis, scientists started utilizing solar energy for various purposes. We shall study the common uses of solar energy in a broader sense from the following content.How does Solar Energy Work
Before going into the usefulness of solar energy, we shall study how this system works. Solar energy or the radiant energy is harnessed by human beings to serve a plentiful purposes. This energy is put forth to use by techniques that utilize various theories of physics and chemistry. The crude form of energy gets converted to useful source by the photovoltaic cells or heat engines. The energy captured by the solar cells (mostly made up of silicon) is converted to electrical energy that is useful for many purposes. The mechanism by which the solar cells work is a physicochemical process that helps in production of energy. Now this energy is harnessed to carry out a wide range of day to day works.
Solar Energy Uses
The concept of utilizing solar power has large industrial applications. If you consider solar energy over exhaustible sources of energy, then the advantages are many. Solar energy is cost effective and it requires no additional expenses in harnessing. The only cost incurred is in manufacturing the cells. The biggest advantage is that solar energy is an infinite source and we would never run short of in near future. Unlike other sources of energy (carbon dioxide and coal), solar energy doesn't cause pollution. Thus, it is completely environment friendly. It is due to these facts that future uses of solar energy are on the positive side. Let's find out the uses of solar energy from the content below.
* Micro hydro system is a mechanism by which photovoltaic (PV) cells are used for running turbines to generate hydro power. PV systems are largely incorporated in remote areas for distribution of drinking water. The use of solar pumps is very common in such areas. Hospital and water supply zones are also equipped with PV systems for carrying out desalination. The only thing that they need to do is to keep battery storage to prevent running out of supply.
* Solar energy being the cheapest source of energy is also used in small scale industries for running low duty machines. If it's used for heavy duty electrical loads then a hybrid power system is set up that serves to connect the photovoltaic cells to diesel generators. It is also used in radio stations and T.V signaling stations to garner power for generating electricity. Solar energy finds a large application in the power light houses and in aircraft warning lights. Being considerably cheap, it's also used for lighting traffic signals, buoys and offshore navigation purposes. These are some of the direct uses of solar energy.
* Photovoltaic mechanism is employed for making solar cookers and home heating appliances. The advantage of solar energy is best employed for this purpose. Solar panels are raised on roof tops for harnessing solar energy. Some other home appliances that run on solar energy are solar cookers, solar water heaters, solar refrigerators and solar composting toilets. You can check out the utility of these products from home improvement shops marketing solar energy products.

Extraction of Trimyristin from Nutmeg

http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQ6UJIsnSGGyHiPvhMPdhZ-Kfc7gEB8bffs_0mg17rN64XWzWCESo it's practical time and the laboratory seems to have assumed a personality of its own, an ominous one at that, as the chemistry sessions seem to be getting hotter than ever in tandem with the climate out there, eh? Well, well, I don't really have the authority to say 'no worry, no sweat; let not studies get you upset!' - I wish I were your college principal but then where's the guarantee that I won't turn into an academic sadist (a thousand apologies if any of you readers happen to hold the venerable position but you see, if trashing your good name is what it takes to get the attention of young scholars these days, so be it!) as well?! However, in such a case, the least I can (and will) do is to share some useful information that I picked up during my own college days with all you future scientists out there! So, here's a brief and easy tutorial on extraction of trimyristin from nutmeg for a starter.
Isolation of Trimyristin from Nutmeg
Before we proceed towards the isolation procedure, let me give you a brief overview of what trimyristin is. It is a chemical derivative of myristic acid, a triglyceride to be specific. Myristic acid, in turn, is a saturated fatty acid and is found in abundance in nutmegs. In fact, the term myristic acid comes from Myristica fragrans which is the scientific name for the most common commercially available species of nutmeg. In fact, the genus to which nutmeg species belong is simply known as Myristica! Coming back to trimyristin (before this chemistry tutorial gets any more diverted and turns into a full fledged botany lecture!), this ester (Oh! Did I miss telling you that? Sorry!) is the chief constituent of nutmeg butter, accounting for as much as 75% of its total composition.

Shoreline Biome

http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRJ5Pq2DlpeLTkqtUVky-fg1nVx-LeNTLh7z6ZmhHhx2nSvE0w_A shoreline is formed when the water merges with the land. Land is often submerged in water and gets exposed when the water pulls back. This part of the land and water is a habitat to many living organisms and aquatic animals. As known to many of us, water is a source of life and as it makes its way to the land it also brings along different life forms with it. Even the shallow portion of the shore is home to many different, unique and interesting animals and plants. Shorelines are not only shelter to numerous life forms but also a source of food to humans and birds like seagulls. There are different types of shorelines all over the world. Some are rocky while some are sandy shores and life forms are different on these two types of shorelines. Lets us now take a look at different shoreline biomes on these two types of shorelines.
Sandy Shoreline Habitat
Sandy shorelines consists more of soft sand, shells and small rocks. These types of shorelines hold interesting yet unstable life forms beneath and around it. Changes in the level of tides creates an intertidal zone wherein many marine animals seek shelter. During the time of high tide, these marine animals come out to feed themselves as the tide brings food with it. As the day passes, the approach of low tide sends away the marine animals back to their shelters, where they spend most of their lives. The animals that are found on the shore live their life beneath the sand and often make an appearance during high tide. Sandy shoreline life has adapted itself very well to the high and the low tides. Some of the interesting life forms found on sandy shorelines are as follows:

    * Sea Star
    * Snails
    * Sea Turtles
    * Horseshoe Crabs
    * Egrets
    * Sea Oats
    * Ghost Crabs
    * Smooth Bay Shrimp
    * Hermit Crabs
    * Marshes
There are many organisms that make burrows into the sand and only come out at the time of low tide for food. Sand provides a strong shelter for these living organisms as it keeps them safe from other predators and even the wild sea waves.

How do Elevators Work

One invention that has proved to be a boon for human beings is the elevator. Be it offices, hotels, hospitals or homes, elevators can be found everywhere. The main function of these machines is to transport people and things from one floor of the building to another. With the pressing of a few buttons, you can reach the desired floor without having to climb stairs. In the earlier days only high rise buildings and hospitals had elevators. But these days, elevators are being installed even in homes. If you are planning to install one at your home then check the home elevator costs so that you can plan and purchase the elevator for your home according to your requirement. Let us now take a look at how elevators work.

Closed Vs. Open Circulatory System

Oxygen is vital for life. This oxygen is diffused into the body cells via a blood circulatory system. This circulation not only helps carry oxygen to cells, but also carries nutrients and waste to and fro from the body tissues. There are two types of circulatory systems in animals. These include a closed circulatory system and an open circulatory system. Most vertebrates have a closed circulation, while an open circulation is found in arthropods and a few mollusks. Let us compare the closed vs open circulatory system and know more about each system in detail.
Closed Circulatory System
A closed circulatory system is found in vertebrates as well as some of the higher invertebrates. The blood in the body flows through a system of arteries, veins and capillaries. Each organ in the body is surrounded by capillaries that provides nourishment, oxygen as well as takes away waste products. There are two major functions of a closed circulatory system. The pulmonary circulation helps carry deoxygenated blood from the organs to the lungs and the systemic circulation helps in carrying the oxygenated blood from the lungs to the various parts of the body. The blood moves through the veins and arteries due to a difference in pressure. This system suits larger animals perfectly as there is more area to be covered. As this is a closed system, the organs are not bathed in blood directly. The volume of the blood is lower than the blood in animals with an open circulatory system. The blood is pumped into the blood vessels with the help of the heart. This helps maintain the high pressure that is necessary for the blood to reach each and every extremity of the body.

Just like manual transmission, All Wheel Drive (AWD) has also proven to be a great feature in vehicles. This traction-control function is mandatorily required and implemented in cars used for rallying or driving in adverse road and weather conditions. In the following section, we are going to talk about the best manual transmission cars with AWD.

Life Cycle of Gymnosperms

The evolution of gymnosperms can be traced back to the Paleozoic era, during which they were found abundantly. At present, there are approximately 700-900 living gymnosperm species. They are basically woody, large-sized and bear evergreen foliage. The leaves are reduced, of which many gymnosperms have needle-shaped leaves. More info on gymnosperm basics and life cycle of gymnosperms are highlighted in the upcoming paragraphs.
Information on Gymnosperms
The name gymnosperm is derived from the Greek word for naked seeds (gymnospermos). Both gymnosperms and angiosperms are grouped under the spermatophyte group of evolved plants. Both produce seeds for the purpose of propagation. But, what differentiates them is the seed types. While gymnosperm seeds are borne without any covering, the seeds of angiosperms are present inside fruits. Some of the oldest known plants and tallest plants belong to gymnosperms. Common examples of gymnosperms that we encounter in our surroundings include the following -
    * Cypress
    * Pine
    * Gnetum
    * Cycad
    * Cycas

LCD vs LED TV Lifespan

Flat screen HDTVs have become very common in the consumer electronics market today, but they do cost a pretty penny. When one is shelling out a few thousand dollars for a television set, then one needs to know everything possible about the technology used, before making the purchase. LCD TVs and LED TVs are perhaps the most popular HDTVs in the market today, but there are some major differences between the technologies that are incorporated in both of them. As a result of this, the lifespan of each of these TV sets is very different, and there are many people, for whom, this is a decisive factor.
For a certain group of people, the purchase of a TV is something that happens once in a decade. For such people, the lifespan of the TV set is far more important than any other factor, because they just want the TV set to last as long as possible. The picture output on an LCD TV and an LED TV is great in its own right, but for these people, this parameter is not important at all, and they are more concerned with how long the TV is actually going to function for them. Now, let us have a look at an LCD vs LED TV lifespan.

DLP Projector Reviews

DLP stands for Digital Light Processing, and this is a technology that is commonly used in some TV sets and projectors today. The concept is a trademark that is owned by Texas Instruments (TI), and the projectors that use DLP technology can show high quality video content on a screen between 150 and 200 inches.Before we get into some DLP projector reviews, you should know a little bit more about the technology that is made use of. The reflective chips inside regular LCD projectors make the light pass through them, but in the case of DLP projectors the light reflects off these chips. This results in a situation where the mirrors of the chips can be placed closer together on a semiconductor chip, and this improves the quality of the picture. The semiconductor chips in projectors are known as Digital Micromirror Devices (DMD).
You can then choose between a single-chip projector or a three-chip projector. Single-chip projectors use light sources like lasers for producing primary colors, or alternately use a white lamp that is placed between the chip and the DLP lamp. Three-chip projectors, on the other hand, use a prism to split the light, and then route each primary color back to a DLP chip, so they are better suited for projectors that are used in large areas or for the high-end best DLP projectors. When people start comparing DLP vs LCD projectors, there are many advantages that can be seen but the better color output of DLP projectors is a definite advantage.

Nook vs Nook Color

here are many entries in the eBook reader market, and the Nook is one of the few pioneer devices around. The Nook Color is a newly released and upgraded version. Don't be fooled by the simple moniker, into thinking it's simply a colored version of the previous one. In this article, take a detailed look at both the Nook and the Nook color, and how they match up in our Nook vs Nook Color debate.
What is a Nook?
The most famous eReader arguably, is the Amazon Kindle, which was released in 2007. Not to be outdone, the American publishing house, Barnes & Noble developed an eReader of their own called the Nook, released in 2009. It has the distinction of being the first Android eBook reader. The Nook has a black and white display, and a smaller color touchscreen below, for navigation and input. There are two small arrow keys on the each side of the device to turn the pages. You can download the eBooks from the Barnes & Noble site, and browse them at leisure on the Nook. It also plays mp3s and displays image files. It has Wi-Fi connectivity, so you can connect to the store through your own wireless network or a free At&T 3G network. The Nook has a "Lend Me" feature, where you can "lend" your eBook to someone else for up to 2 weeks. You can also access your local library eBooks and free Google books, with the ePUB format. The Nook has 2 versions, a Wi-Fi+3G and a Wi-Fi only model. The Nook was anxiously awaited in electronic gadget circles, as a worthy competitor to the Kindle, and Times listed it as one of its "Top 10 Gadgets of 2009". It also won the TechCrunch Best New Gadget Crunchie award for 2009 . But it faced some criticism as well, for certain technical and usability issues. Its page turning speed and screen refresh rate was very slow and sluggish. But thanks to software updates from B&N, the page turning speed improved rapidly, and new features were added such as games (chess, sudoku), pre-order books option, "My Shelves" feature for organizing the user's eBook library and Go-To-Page ability.

iPhone Hard Reset

Happens. Sometimes, out of nowhere, you find out that your iPhone is not responding. In other words, it is frozen. The Apple iPhone, even though it has made a place for itself in the tech-market, is fraught with a gamut of problems every now and then. Owners and users all over the world report problems as frequently as they report how much they love using it. One of the most common problems witnessed by users is a sudden freeze in the screen where everything blacks out. However, soft resetting your iPhone works in most cases (those who don't have a clue about how to soft-reset an iPhone, the method is explained later). It is for those times that when soft-resetting fails, iPhone hard reset may bring your iPhone back to life. But how to do it? Check out the following section, which instructs you in easy steps on how to hard reset an iPhone successfully.

How to Trace a Mobile Number

Being able to trace a mobile number on a map in real time seems to be stuff right out of a spy movie, doesn't it? What was once a technology exclusively available to the armed forces and other government agencies, is now available to the common man. GPS enabled phones can be easily traced using the right software. In this Buzzle article, I will show you how to trace a mobile number using GPS software.
About Mobile Phone Tracking
A good question to ask is how does GPS mobile phone number tracking work. It is all made possible due to GPS chips installed in all GPS enabled phones. These chips receive signals from the cellular network, from different points and this information can be used to mathematically determine the location of the cell phone. To provide the location of information, the phone needs to be fitted with a special software, which can send information to a remote web server, from where the location can be traced on your computer.There are many free GPS cell phone tracking software programs available out there, which can do this job for you. Of course, you cannot trace anybody's phone without their consent as it requires the running of a software program on their phone. Most of these programs work like social networking sites, whereby the friends you 'add' using the program, display their map location to you. I introduce you to three such programs in the following lines.
How to Trace a Mobile Number Using GPS Software?
The integration of 3G wireless Internet on your mobile phone and GPS services provide two ways of tracing mobile phones. There are applications which can trace even non GPS enabled phones quite easily. Here are four options explaining how to trace a mobile number.

Microsoft Launches Internet Explorer 9 at SXSW

Treamlined Design
The new interface is sexy and puts it's emphasis on the internet browsing experience as oppsed to the large search tools and boxes we find on earlier versions of Internet Explorer. Fear not, however! If you are a fan of the "old" interface, Microsoft gives you the option of restoring those features with a simple right-click funtionality.
Pinned Sites
For sites that you visit frequently, all you need to do is click the icon to the left of the website address and drag it to the task bar. Faster means better productivity and better social networking.
Download Manager
Microsoft, ever the target for viruses and hackers looking to steal your information, has implemented a great new feature into IE9. The new download manager not only lets you pause and restart downloads, it also notifies you of possibly malicious programs looking to hijack your computer.

What is a Solar Eclipse

Our ignorance about basic solar eclipse facts is quite surprising, considering that most of us have had it as a part of our elementary school curriculum. The fact that as many as five solar eclipses can take place in a single calendar year is bound to come as a surprise for many, but that's absolutely true. In fact, year 2011 in itself has as many as four solar eclipses lined up - the first of which occurred on 4th January, while the rest of the three are lined up for 1st June, 1st July and 25th November respectively. There is absolutely no doubt about the fact that solar eclipse schedule for 2011 is quite promising in itself, but you need to brush up your knowledge about this celestial occurrence if you are to make sure that you make the most of these opportunities coming your way in 2011.
What is a Solar Eclipse and How Does it Occur?
In astronomy, solar eclipse is a celestial event wherein the moon - while orbiting the Earth, comes in between the Sun and the Earth in such manner that it blocks the view of the solar body when seen from a particular location on the planet. As moon lies between the Sun and the Earth, its shadow falls on the planet. If you happen to reside in the particular area where the shadow falls, you will not be able to see the Sun - and hence it is referred to as the eclipse of the Sun. Solar eclipses can be divided into three different types:
* Total solar eclipse - wherein the Sun appears to be totally covered by the moon. A total solar eclipse only lasts for 3 minutes on an average. (Last occurred: 11th July, 2010. Next occurrence: 13th November, 2012.
* Partial solar eclipse - wherein a part of the Sun appears to be covered by the moon. All the four solar eclipses scheduled for 2011 are partial solar eclipses. (Last occurred 4th January, 2011. Next occurrence: 1st June, 2011.)
* Annular solar eclipse - wherein the moon is placed in such a manner that the Sun appears like a diamond ring. In this case, the moon is located at the farthest point in its orbit. (Last occurred: 15th January, 2010. Next occurrence: 20th May, 2012.)

What is Electromagnetic Radiation

Everything that we witness through our mortal eyes is in some or the other ways, a manifestation of energy. Energy is the essence of this Universe and life. The term 'radiation' although has a very simple meaning, it has significant usage and effect in the world of Physics. Radiation in Physics language stands for a phenomena in which energetic particles or waves travel through a medium. Correlating this to Electromagnetic Radiation (EMR), we can say that this is nothing but energy particles or wave that travel through a medium and they have the following properties:
* EMRs consist of electric and magnetic waves oscillating in phase perpendicular to each other as well as perpendicular to the direction of energy propagation.
* EMRs possess both wave and particle like characteristics.
So, did you understand what exactly is electromagnetic radiation? You can imagine EMRs to be waves or particles composed of electric and magnetic fields. Did you pay attention as to why I'm referring EMRs either as particles or waves? Well, that is due to the most famous wave-particle duality law in Physics. As per this law, matter exhibits both wave and particle like properties. Electromagnetic waves origin and theory are mostly credited to Scottish Physicist, James Clark Maxwell and the German Physicist, Heinrich Hertz.

Cleaning and Organizing Your Computer

It is a good idea to think of your PC as an office. It stores files, programs, pictures. This can be compared to an actual office's files, machines and decorations. The operating system is the boss. With this image in mind, think of an office you've visited that was slow and inefficient. There were probably many different reasons for the inefficiency. This is the same with a computer. There can be many items that slow down your computer. Perhaps the one most commonly overlooked is disorganization and clutter.
Disk Cleanup
An office can accumulate a lot of unnecessary files, machines, and decorations. This is the same with your computer. One of the best ways to keep this clutter under control is to perform a cleaning utility periodically. In Windows this cleaning utility will be called a "disk cleanup." It removes a variety of unnecessary files depending on the options you have selected.
To perform a disk cleanup on Windows XP you can simply click on "my computer" under the start menu. Than right click on your "c drive" or "hard disk" and choose properties. Than click "disk cleanup" and follow the prompts. When selecting files to clean up, or delete, Windows will give you information to help you decide. When looking over the list of file types, you would simple click on the name of the file type and read the description placed below in the description area. This will let you know if the files can be safely deleted. To select the file group just check the box next to the group name. When finished selecting press "OK" to finish.
Now, performing a disk cleanup is not very time consuming, just a couple minutes, and it may save more time in the end by making your computer run faster. However, a disk cleanup should be run periodically rather than just once in a great while. One way to make this run periodically is to make it a scheduled task. This will allow your computer to run it automatically with intervals and time of day determined by you. Yet, you can always run it yourself periodically without creating a scheduled task.
Add or Remove Programs
The information given above can help you get rid of some unnecessary files, but you may also need to clean out some unnecessary programs as well. This can be done using the "add or remove programs" utility in Windows. This is located in the control panel and lists all of your currently installed programs along with an option to uninstall them. It is a good idea to browse through the add or remove programs utility every once in a while just to make sure that all programs are of usefulness.If there are programs listed that are no longer used, you can simply highlight the program and click the uninstall button. Windows will than begin the process to uninstall the program. In most cases, to finish uninstalling a program, it is wise to restart your computer. This will dump and files that are held temporarily.
The add or remove programs utility is very useful, but not all of the programs are listed up front. Programs that come pre-installed on your computer and the Windows operating system can also be uninstalled. For instance, Outlook Express is a default e-mail program that comes with the Windows XP operating system. If you do not use this e-mail program you can uninstall it. Click "add or remove windows components" found in the add or remove programs utility and simply follow the instructions.
Defragment
Many offices contain a large number of files and programs that are valuable and cannot be thrown away. In fact, they may contain files that are not even used, but still have to be retained for some reason. Although these files must remain in the office, they need to be organized. This is why we create file folders that hold groups of files that are related. Than we store them in cabinets that are arranged in alphabetic order.In a computer, the files that are saved are placed on the hard drive. However, they are placed according to the time that they were saved. So, if you open a word document and save the file as "file A" and than open another document and save it as "file B", you have a "file A" placed next to "file B." This is fine, but if you open "file A" later on and save it again, than the added information is saved next to "file B."When files are broken up this way it is referred to as a fragmented file. This means that the computer must find the first part of the file and then find the second part of the file to open that one word document. This can make your computer run slower. However, Windows has created a utility that is meant to rearrange files so that they are no longer fragmented but sit right next to each other.
You can run the disk defragmenter by selecting "all programs" under the start button. Next, select "accessories" and "system tools" and you will see "disk defragmenter." In fact, this is also an alternative way to select the disk cleanup mentioned earlier. Before starting the defragmenter you can analyze your hard drive to see if Windows recommends performing the defragmenter. It will either say that you should or should not defragment at this time.
If you need to defragment your computer, simply hit the defragment button. It may take your computer a while to finish this task depending on the speed of your computer and the amount of defragmented files. It could take from about 15-30 minutes or more. However, you can still use the computer while the disk defragmenter is working.
